Temple Emeth - reform Jewish synagogue in Bergen County, Northern New Jersey (Teaneck)

From the President

Opportunities Come from Challenges

Change isn’t always easy, it usually isn’t. As we stated at our installation as Co-Presidents, we look forward to the tasks and responsibilities of our office as well as knowing our efforts will make a difference in the functioning and life of the Temple.

One of the biggest challenges we faced as incoming presidents was the successful renovation of our sanctuary ceiling that had deteriorated over time, was in disrepair and a bit of an eyesore. Its asbestos composition, though minute, made it a far more complex project which required extremely thorough and detailed plans. Additionally, there were time constraints with the opening of the Early Childhood Center summer program. We are pleased to say that Camp opened on time. We are also so very pleased to say that as of this time we are on schedule for completion by Labor Day. Construction has gone remarkably well. We expect to enjoy the fruits of our labor, complete with new lighting and a new sound system for our High Holiday services.

We first want to recognize the generosity of Temple members who contributed to the Capital Campaign. Without them, our plans would have only been part of a wish list. Secondly, we want to acknowledge the amazing job Executive Committee member Mark Chelemer did as our virtual project manager on this. We also thank our House chair, Sue Keusch for additional responsibilities related to this project. Our clergy, staff and custodians have adapted well to dealing with any changes or inconvenience due to the construction.

We have discovered that not only will we have a fabulous new ceiling, but as an added benefit and by-product of undertaking this, we experienced new and creative ways of worshipping in new environments and with new partners. We attended Shabbat services in conjunction with both Reform and Conservative congregations including Beth Am, Beth El, and Beth Sholom. We held outdoor Shabbat evening services with barbeque on July 4th at Jill and Barry Kanter’s lovely home. Along with Temple Beth El we held services on the breathtaking Palisades preceded by a hike. We also had a different kind of music service with new songs and melodies and enjoyed the musical talent of our cantor, and Wendy Kosakoff and David Kohane. It is so gratifying and fortunate for us to have so many talented volunteers that are integral to making Temple Emeth the special place it is.

One has to wonder whether we would have had the same opportunities to try new and different things if we were worshipping in the sanctuary as usual. Or if we would have collaborated to the same degree with other congregations and in the process explored and developed vital partnerships.

We wish you all a happy and healthy new year and look forward to seeing you and your families at Temple and experiencing our new and improved sanctuary at the High Holidays.

May you and yours be inscribed for a sweet and healthy New Year 5770.

L’Shanah Tovah,
Wendy and Richard
