Social Action in Action

The Social Action Committee supports, via education and various activities, organizations and concerns that reflect our Jewish values and help us to work toward repairing the world or tikun olam. To join us, contact socialaction@emeth.org
 

Here are some of our projects:

  • We conduct High Holiday and Passover food drives, as well as Mitzvah of the Month collections throughout the year.
  • Temple Emeth serves more than 200 people twice a year at a walk-in dinner for the homeless in Hackensack via Family Promise.
  • A separate group of Temple Emeth gardeners grow food, which is contributed to a local food pantry.
  • Social Action has been involved in local activities, including the Sanctuary program and oil train safety concerns.
  • Social Action has been involved in local activities including, the Sanctuary program, oil train concerns, and prevention of gun violence.
  • ​​​​Temple Emeth is a HIAS Welcome Congregation.
  • The Social Action Committee supports three themed Shabbats: Repro Shabbat, Refugee Shabbat, and Earth Day. Our 2024 Earth Day Shabbat included a tour of the Teaneck Creek Conservancy and a Kiddush lunch.
  • On advocacy projects, Temple Emeth works in collaboration with the Religious Action Center (RAC-NJ). REcently, the committee worked with RAC-NJ on various election initiatives, including:
    • Every Voice/Every Vote—including Same-Day Registration
    • Community Conversations with our legislators
    • Weekly postcard initiatives throughout the election season
    • Education and advocacy around school integration, Learning Together.
